What is a Feed-In Tariff?
A Feed-In Tariff (FiT) represents the monetary value you earn when any surplus solar electricity generated but not used is sent back to the grid. It’s essential to note that a FiT differs from government rebates that reduce the upfront cost of your solar system.
Typically, your electricity provider is the entity that purchases the excess solar electricity you generate. They, in turn, sell this surplus to other households or businesses that lack solar panels or consume more electricity than their solar system generates at a given moment.
The earnings from the FiT are calculated based on the quantity of kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity your system exports to the grid. These earnings are credited on your electricity bill. This means that even if you don’t consume all the electricity produced by your solar system, you can still benefit from it, helping you pay off your initial investment more swiftly.
When feed-in tariffs were initially introduced, their rates were considerably higher than they are today. This was done to incentivize homeowners to adopt solar technology early on.
Over time, feed-in tariff rates have decreased, but so has the cost of installing solar power systems. With prices declining by over 50% since 2012, solar can often prove to be a worthwhile investment even without a substantial feed-in tariff, as it frequently offers a short payback period.
