Residential Solar
What is a solar system?
A solar system, often referred to as a PV system or solar power system, is engineered to transform sunlight into electrical energy utilizing solar panels and a range of accompanying components.
In residential settings, solar systems are typically set up with solar panels strategically positioned on rooftops to maximize sun exposure. These panels capture solar rays and convert them into Direct Current Energy (DC). The DC energy is subsequently transformed into Alternating Current Energy (AC) after passing through the system’s inverter.
Once converted to AC electricity, a household utilizes this power source instead of drawing electricity from the conventional grid or a battery.
The electricity production capacity of a solar system depends on factors like system size, environmental conditions, daylight hours, and the efficiency of the specific system chosen.
In cases where a house incorporates a grid-connected solar system, it can draw additional power from the grid if the solar system is not generating sufficient energy. Alternatively, homes equipped with off-grid solar systems can resort to a generator or battery as a secondary power source.
Note: Grid-connected systems may also include the option of a battery, contingent on the type of inverter used in the solar system.
Excess energy generated
When you have a solar system, any electricity you use that’s generated by the system essentially comes at no cost to you. Any surplus energy is sent to the grid, unless you have integrated battery storage. The additional energy sent to the grid is then compensated to the owner of the solar system through a Feed-in Tariff (FIT), which should reflect as a credit on your electricity bill.
Solar systems typically operate most efficiently on sunny, clear days with temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius. However, they still generate power even in cloudy or overcast conditions. Solar panels require some level of sunlight to capture solar energy and, as a result, they do not generate power during nighttime hours.

Energy usage habits
The recommended approach when you have a solar PV system is to adapt your energy consumption patterns to align with the period when your solar system generates power, typically during daylight hours. This strategy effectively lessens your energy consumption at night, diminishing your dependence on the grid and subsequently lowering your utility bills.
Explore valuable suggestions on how to modify your energy usage patterns and optimize your solar-related cost savings.
Hint: The abbreviation PV stands for “photovoltaic,” denoting the process of converting light into electricity.

We received three excellent quotes from very competent suppliers who visited us and spent some time analysing our needs and supplied very detailed written quotes. We also had a quote from a supplier who was independently recommended to us. I then used the Solar Market site to check the reviews of the suppliers and the inverter and the solar panels to enable me to make an informed recommendation as to who we should sign up with.
