Types Of Solar Battery Storage Setups
Retrofit
A grid-connected solar power system that lacks a hybrid inverter can still be retrofitted with battery storage. To achieve this, you will need to incorporate a battery inverter, a metering unit, and the battery into the existing solar power system.
A solar power system equipped with a hybrid inverter is often referred to as ‘battery-ready.’ This is because a hybrid inverter, serving as an all-in-one unit for both solar and battery functions, allows the addition of battery storage without the need for extra components.
While hybrid inverters may come at a higher initial cost than standard solar inverters, opting for a hybrid can yield long-term savings if you plan to integrate a battery.”
Off-Grid / Standalone System
A battery inverter differs from the solar inverter already present in your system. The solar inverter’s primary role is to convert DC power from the panels into AC power for household use. Battery inverters, on the other hand, perform bidirectional conversions, enabling the battery to charge using excess solar-generated energy and discharge it to power the household when sunlight is unavailable.
Hybrid or Battery-Ready System
An Off-Grid Solar System is also known as a ‘standalone’ system. This type of solar power system operates independently from the grid and necessitates the inclusion of a battery system. Off-Grid solar power systems are relatively rare and are typically found in rural areas where connecting to the grid is challenging.
These systems must be meticulously designed to supply sufficient energy and storage capacity to meet the property’s needs day and night, without relying on grid assistance. In cases of insufficient electricity generation due to weather conditions, backup generators can be installed.
It’s crucial to note that going Off-Grid is generally not a cost-effective option for homes in metropolitan areas and is typically recommended for remote regions with limited grid accessibility.
