Learn About Batteries
What Is Solar Battery Storage?
Solar battery storage, also referred to as a solar battery system, represents an optional element within a solar power setup. Its function involves storing excess energy generated by the solar system during the day to be used when the solar panels aren’t actively generating electricity, such as at night.
For a solar battery system to be practical, the solar panels must generate surplus energy during daylight hours for the battery to accumulate. This stored energy can then power your household during periods when solar panels aren’t producing energy. Without a battery, a solar-equipped home relies on the grid during such periods, with any excess energy being sent back to the grid, typically in exchange for feed-in tariffs.
Adding a battery to your solar system is a step towards achieving energy independence. However, it’s essential to recognize that the benefits of battery systems come after the advantages offered by a solar power system itself. For certain households, integrating a battery system can provide significant benefits, reducing their reliance on the grid or enabling independence from the grid as part of an off-grid system.
It’s important to understand that while battery prices are gradually decreasing, installing a battery might not yield an immediate financial benefit as a solar system does. In today’s pricing scenario (assuming no state-specific subsidies or incentives for batteries), the expected return on investment may range from 8 to 15 years. As technology advances and batteries become more accessible, it’s anticipated that prices will decrease, similar to the trend observed in solar systems.
Households with smaller solar systems that generate limited surplus energy may find it more cost-effective to receive feed-in tariffs for their excess power rather than investing in battery storage. In contrast, those with larger solar systems and a significant surplus of energy could derive substantial benefits from incorporating battery storage.
Battery Specifications and Factors Influencing Pricing:
-
Government Incentives: The Federal Government and various State Governments offer support and incentives for solar and/or battery storage in solar PV systems. The availability of these incentives varies by state and affects the overall cost of your battery storage system. Details on specific government incentives for each state can be found here.
-
Cycle Life-Time: This term pertains to the number of complete charge and discharge cycles a battery can undergo before reaching the end of its operational life.
-
Battery Power (kW): This metric measures how quickly a battery can be charged or discharged.
-
Storage Capacity (kWh): This indicates the maximum amount of energy that a battery system can store.
-
Depth of Discharge: This factor defines the extent to which a battery can be discharged to its total capacity without experiencing degradation over time while in storage.
-
Battery Management System (BMS): A BMS is an intelligent electronic system that collects data and manages the battery, ensuring it operates within safe parameters and does not overload.
-
Inverter: Battery systems require a dedicated inverter if your solar system lacks a hybrid inverter.
-
Warranty: The warranty specifies the duration or number of cycles during which the battery system is covered.
-
Blackout Protection/Backup: It’s important to note that this is not a standard feature of battery systems and can entail significant costs. Implementing blackout protection involves additional components, specialized installation, and rewiring of your home. For grid-connected homes, the cost of blackout protection may outweigh the benefits.
Throughout the solar quotation process, installers can provide tailored battery options based on your requirements and often assist in navigating available State Government Incentives.

We received three excellent quotes from very competent suppliers who visited us and spent some time analysing our needs and supplied very detailed written quotes. We also had a quote from a supplier who was independently recommended to us. I then used the Solar Market site to check the reviews of the suppliers and the inverter and the solar panels to enable me to make an informed recommendation as to who we should sign up with. It hapenned to be the independent supplier who is not currently on Solar Market but they had a 5 star average from 89 Google reviews. I thoroughly recommend Solar Market.
