State Government Solar Rebate in WA
While there is no State Government-funded solar rebate in WA, homeowners in the state can access the Federal Government’s Small-scale Technology Certificates incentive (STCs).
Although technically termed an “incentive” rather than a “rebate,” the Federal “solar rebate” in WA translates to substantial savings on the upfront cost of installing a solar system. Read on to learn more.
Federal Government Solar Rebate in WA – STCs
The Small-Scale Technology Certificate program (STCs) is the Australian Federal Government’s solar rebate provided to WA homeowners upon solar system installation.
In practical terms, this translates to an upfront discount on your solar system, eliminating the need for a significant initial expense and waiting for reimbursement.
The solar rebate amount is influenced by various factors, including the system’s size and your location within one of the STC ‘zones.’ As WA is a vast state, it encompasses all four STC zones. The majority of West Australians reside in zone 3.
You can determine your zone by checking your postcode on the STC zone map provided here.
For instance, here’s an example of the STC solar rebate for regions like Perth, Mandurah, Rockingham, Kalgoorlie, Dunsborough, Margaret River, Denmark, Albany, and Busselton:
For more information on STCs and solar rebates in WA, visit our main Australian Solar Rebates and Incentives page.
Due to the complexity of creating and selling STCs, it is common practice to “assign” the STCs to your solar system installer, who then applies a discount to your solar system’s cost. Generally, advertised solar system prices in WA already include the solar rebate, so be sure to review the details.
WA Solar Rebate Calculator – STCs
By now, you understand that when you install solar in WA, you are eligible for the Federal Government’s solar rebate. You might now want to calculate the discount you can receive to determine if solar is a worthwhile investment for your home.
You can use our Solar Calculator to instantly compute the solar rebate applicable to each WA postcode, along with other valuable information.
Simply enter your postcode to estimate:
- Your STC discount (referred to as your “solar rebate”).
- The payback period for your system.
- The savings on your electricity bill with solar.
In WA, the solar rebate varies based on your location and the system’s size, so this tool provides easy-to-understand guidance on potential savings
Solar Incentives in WA – Solar Feed-in Tariffs
In Western Australia (WA), aside from the Federal solar rebate, it’s essential to consider the credit you can receive on your Synergy or Horizon Power bill for any surplus solar electricity that your system generates and you don’t consume. This credit is commonly referred to as a Feed-in Tariff (FiT).
The surplus electricity your solar system produces, which you don’t utilize, isn’t wasted; instead, it flows back into the grid, benefiting your neighbors’ homes or local businesses. In return for this contribution, you receive compensation.
In WA, the FiT rate is determined by the WA State Government under the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS) – for more detailed information, you can refer to the provided link.
It’s important to note that under DEBS, you are eligible to receive a FiT for a solar system with a generating capacity ranging from 500W to 5kW. However, a 6.6kW solar PV system equipped with a 5kW inverter is considered to have a generating capacity of 5kW.
The current WA solar feed-in tariffs are outlined in the table below (though it’s advisable to verify the specific terms and conditions on the respective Synergy or Horizon Power websites)

Alterations to WA Solar Rebates – Restructuring of Feed-in Tariffs
In the year 2020, changes to the WA solar rebates led to modifications in the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) value.
For those who had their solar systems installed prior to the 7th of September 2020:
You would have been enrolled in the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (REBS), entitling you to a fixed rate of 7.13 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for all the electricity you exported, regardless of the time of day.
If your solar system installation occurred after the 7th of September 2020:
You would have been placed under the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), which is structured as follows:
Effective from the 1st of July 2022:
- Electricity net exported during peak hours, between 3 pm and 9 pm, will earn you 10 cents per kWh.
- Electricity net exported at all other times will earn you 2.5 cents per kWh if you are with Synergy and 3.0 cents per kWh if you are with Horizon Power.
The FiT rate under DEBS is tailored to reflect the cost of electricity at the specific time of day when you are exporting to the grid. Consequently, you receive a higher rate for electricity exported during the late afternoon and evening, when demand is at its peak (and hence the wholesale cost is highest), compared to exporting during midday when both demand and costs are lower.
Initially, these changes raised concerns among individuals planning to install solar, as they feared that the alterations in the WA solar rebate system would diminish their solar-related savings. However, the variance in Return on Investment (ROI) between REBS and DEBS is minimal, reaffirming that solar remains a sound investment for the majority of Western Australian households.
Is there a solar rebate for WA?
While there is no state specific solar rebate for WA, the Federal STC incentive you receive when you install your system makes solar affordable for many homes.
How much are the WA solar rebates?
While there is no state specific solar rebate in WA you can still access the Federal STC incentive to receive an upfront discount on your install. The amount you’ll receive depends on:
- Your STC zone
- Your system size
- The year you install
Click here to use our Solar Calculator to find out your STC rebate in seconds.
The State Government may not offer WA a solar rebate like other states, but that’s offset by the low price per watt that you’ll pay on your system and all the extra sunshine WA gets throughout the year.
Who is eligible for the WA solar rebates?
Eligibility for the Federal STC solar rebate in WA is the same as every other state. As long as you’re installing a system no larger than 100kW you’re good to go – most homes nowadays install a system mixed between 6kW and 10kW.
PLUS as long as you install a system with a solar inverter 5kW or less you’ll receive a FiT from Synergy or Horizon Power.
What are the WA solar rebate changes?
The 2020 WA solar rebate changes you might have heard about refer to the WA State Government’s move away from a flat rate feed-in tariff under the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (REBS) of to a variable rate under the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS).
This change to the solar rebate means WA homeowners are encouraged to adopt green energy usage habits that are good for the grid and good for their hip pocket. Click here to see the new Horizon Power and Synergy feed in tariffs .
Is there a WA solar rebate for renters?
There isn’t a WA solar rebate for renters offered by the State Government like there are in some other states.
However, although renters can’t directly access the Federal STC solar rebate in WA you can speak to your landlord to see if they will consider an arrangement where they install the system and you contribute to the cost, knowing you’ll get the savings on your electricity bill.
The best next step is to speak to your landlord and send them this link to get 3 solar quotes to find out the cost to install at your home.
