Rebates South Australia
Seeking Information on Solar Rebates in South Australia (SA)? You’re in the right place! On this page, we offer an extensive overview of:
- All the solar rebates specific to South Australia that residents can access.
- The Federal Government’s STC incentive.
- South Australian solar feed-in tariffs.
It’s important to note right away that South Australia has been a pioneer in solar energy adoption in Australia, thanks to its history of offering generous solar rebates. As a result, SA has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar adoption in the country.
Now, let’s determine if this is still the case…
State-Specific Solar Rebates in South Australia Currently, the South Australian Government doesn’t offer a direct solar rebate to support the implementation of rooftop solar and battery storage in the state.
Fortunately, the City of Adelaide and the private sector have stepped in to bridge this gap.
City of Adelaide – Sustainability Incentive Scheme This solar rebate is designed to benefit SA landlords and homeowners with concession cards who reside within the City of Adelaide. It offers a cashback of up to $5,000 for the installation of a solar system.
As with many other solar rebates, the funding comes from either the SA or Federal Governments. In this case, it’s provided by the City of Adelaide itself.
The amount you receive as cashback is a percentage of your total installation costs, with the specific amount being capped based on the size of your system.
| SYSTEM SIZE | REBATE AMOUNT (PERCENTAGE OF SYSTEM PRICE ) | MAX REBATE |
|---|---|---|
| ≥1.5 kW to ≤10 kW | 20% | $1,000 |
| >10 kW to ≤20 kW | 20% | $2,500 |
| >20 kW | 20% | $5,000 |
Within this program, you can also access the following benefits:
- Up to $2,000 for electric vehicle charging equipment (for both cars and bikes).
- Up to $1,000 for a solar hot water system.
- Up to $5,000 for a rainwater tank.
- Up to $500 for an electricity management system to utilize off-peak electricity.
For more detailed information, please visit the City of Adelaide’s website by clicking here.
Not a concession cardholder or a landlord? No worries. There are additional solar rebates available to South Australian residents, as outlined below:
State-Specific Solar Battery Rebates in South Australia Currently, there isn’t a Solar Battery Rebate available in South Australia.
Previously, the South Australian government administered the Home Battery Scheme, which provided subsidies and low-interest loans to all SA residents purchasing a battery. However, this scheme has concluded, and there is no information regarding any new offers in the pipeline.
Nevertheless, there is still an opportunity to obtain an affordable battery by participating in the South Australia Virtual Power Plant.
South Australia Virtual Power Plant and the Tesla Energy Plan
The South Australian Virtual Power Plant is a program initiated by the South Australian Government in collaboration with Tesla. Its objective is to establish Australia’s largest Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
The goal is to create a vast network of interconnected Tesla batteries that can intelligently store and export energy to meet the broader grid’s demands.
Participation in this scheme and its associated benefits depends on whether you reside in private or public housing:
For Public Housing: Housing SA properties may be considered for the program if they are a suitable fit. Residents who agree to join as SA VPP customers will have a solar system with a Tesla Powerwall home battery installed and maintained at their residence at no cost. In return, residents receive:
- An exclusive electricity price (the lowest residential rate in the state).
- Use of the Powerwall to support the home during power outages.
- A low daily electricity supply charge.
During phase 1, approximately 1,100 Housing SA properties received free solar and Tesla Powerwall home battery systems, and phase 3 is now underway to incorporate an additional 3,000 Housing SA properties.
For Private Households: If you own your own home and either have or plan to install a Tesla Powerwall, you can join the SA VPP through the Tesla Energy Plan. By granting Tesla access to your Powerwall for optimizing energy exports, you’ll receive benefits such as:
- An exclusive Feed-in Tariff (FiT) rate for the solar energy you export.
- An extended warranty on your Powerwall.
- Grid Support Credits to offset your energy bill, and more.
Both new and existing Powerwall home battery owners are eligible to apply.
EV Purchase Subsidy While not strictly a solar rebate, South Australian motorists can now access a $3,000 subsidy when purchasing a new electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, along with a 3-year registration exemption. This subsidy is available for a limited number of vehicles, specifically 7,000 vehicles valued at less than $68,750 (including GST).
Federal Government Solar Incentive – STCs in South Australia In addition to the State Government solar rebates, South Australian residents can benefit from the Federal Government’s STC incentive, commonly known as the ‘STC Rebate.’
Small Scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are generated when you install a new solar system and can be traded for a substantial upfront discount. The size of your system, the year of installation, and your location within the ‘STC zone’ all contribute to determining the rebate amount. South Australia falls primarily within zone 3.

Solar Electricity Buyback Rates in South Australia
While the upfront government solar rebates in South Australia are advantageous, it’s essential not to overlook the potential savings from your solar feed-in tariff (FiT).
Your electricity provider compensates you for the surplus electricity generated by your solar system that your household doesn’t consume. Essentially, they purchase the excess electricity from you and subsequently distribute it to your neighbors who require it at that particular moment.
The current South Australian solar feed-in tariffs can be found in the table below. However, it’s advisable to verify the specific terms and conditions on each retailer’s website
